Ships are sent to investigate a series of signals from the spatial desert bordering the Coalition after a series of probes are lost. The crew discovers a destroyed planet covered in radioactivity and noxious chemicals. As the vessels draw near, they are subject to withering fire from the dead world.
Lieutenant Mikal Rush leads a squadron of fighters to explore the ruins, retrieving clues in the wreckage at a terrible cost.
Continuing their exploration, they discover the planet Tirel, finding the atmosphere and large parts of the surface ripped away by the Tempest of Tirel. Rush and his pilots are attacked; lives are lost. Finding the destruction came from Coalition space staggers their collective imaginations.
The future of the Coalition becomes inexplicably tied to frightening events of the distant past.
